The HRH Family Medicine Scientific Planning Committee is pleased to announce our 25th Annual – Clinical Day. Our Family Practice conferences have taken place at Humber River Hospital for many years with great success as an exceptional education program to assist Family Physicians with the management of their patients.
The focus this year is on “Excellence in Health Care – Improving Outcomes”. We are planning to offer a hybrid program with the option for physicians and other primary care providers to attend in-person or virtually.
The Learning Objectives of the program are to enable the participants to improve their clinical skills in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of chronic disease states.

Barb Collins
Barbara Collins was appointed the President and CEO of Humber River Hospital (HRH) in July 2016. In her previous role as COO, she served as the Senior Executive for HRH’s redevelopment project, leading the design, construction and activation of HRH’s Wilson Site in October 2015, North America’s first fully digital hospital. This ground-breaking approach to integrating technology across all hospital systems and workflows was shortly followed by the development and implementation of HRH’s Command Centre in November 2017, a first in Canada and second in the world.
As President and CEO of Humber River Hospital she has overseen the establishment of two Reactivation Care Centres, one at each of the two legacy sites. Reactivation care is a focus program to maximize the health of our senior patients as they return to home or a long term care facility, and is a partnership programs with 8 GTA acute care hospitals. Currently under construction is a 320-bed long-term care facility at the Finch Avenue site scheduled to open in Fall 2022.
Barbara’s commitment to high reliability care and academic mission for hospital and community has led to the development of the North West Toronto Ontario Health Team of which Barbara is a co-chair. HRH has also been able to join the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN) as an associate affiliated academic hospital.
Zaki Ahmed MD, FRCP(C), FCCP
Dr. Zaki Ahmed joined Humber River Hospital as the Chief of Staff and Critical Care Physician in April 2022. He arrived from Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, where he was, most recently the Chief of Staff, and is an Associate Professor at Northern Ontario School of Medicine. He has a robust background in program development and management as well as academics. An Internist, Respirologist and Intensivist by training, Dr. Ahmed has a special interest in Medical Leadership. He has completed a Masters Certificate in Physician Leadership from Schulich School of Business / York University and a Masters in Health Sciences in Health Administration from Institute of Health Policy Management and Evaluation at University of Toronto. He is a Registered Corporate Coach with the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches and is a strong advocate for the role of coaching and mentorship in Medicine.
In his current role, he has prioritized the development of the Family Medicine Teaching Unit at Humber River Health which started in July of 2023. His work includes the development of educational and training opportunities such as fellowships in surgical subspecialties and Gynecology. He has a keen interest in advancing Quality Improvement and Physician Wellness.
Lesley Hawkins MD, FRCSC
Dr. Lesley Hawkins is a generalist Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Humber River Hospital with special interests in family planning, contraception care and minimally invasive surgery.
She completed her residency training at the University of Toronto in 2018. She holds faculty positions at the University of Toronto and Queen’s University. She recently graduated from her Master’s in Health Professionals Education at McMaster University in 2021 and has a passion for clinical teaching and simulation-based team building curricula.

Andre Laroche MD, FRCSC
Dr Andre LaRoche completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from McMaster University and furthered his education with a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Chronic pelvic pain at the University of Ottawa. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen’s University School of Medicine, McMaster University and also at The University of Toronto. Dr. LaRoche focus is on medical and surgical management of endometriosis, fibroids and urogynecological issues. He also sees obstetrical patients for full or shared care.
Lynn Sterling MD, FRCSC, MSc, NCMP
Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Humber River Hospital
Dr. Lynn Sterling completed her medical school and residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto and furthered her education with a Masters in Health Sciences Education at McMaster University. She is a North American Menopause Society Certified Menopause Practitioner (NCMP) and has completed additional training in Colposcopy & Vulvar Disorders both locally and internationally.
She practices as a general obstetrician and gynaecologist with a focus on obstetrics, minimally invasive surgery, menopause, and colposcopy/vulvar disorders. She has a special interest in teaching medical students and residents. She was the recipient of Humber River Hospital’s 2021 Dragon’s Den award which has funded a CO2 laser to treat lower genital tract disorders at our hospital.
John Townley MD, FRCSC
Born in Canada, John spent his formative years in the UK, studying medicine at the University of Cambridge. He did his orthopaedic surgery residency at UofT and two upper extremity fellowships ( Sunnybrook and Brisbane, Australia). He has been a staff surgeon at HRH since 2015 and is currently Division Head of orthopaedic surgery. His areas of clinical interest are shoulder pathology and upper extremity trauma.
Joshua Dias MD
Dr. Joshua Dias is a staff psychiatrist who started working at Humber River Hospital in 2019. He primarily sees general psychiatric outpatients. He also leads the intensive mood/anxiety day program
(Taking Charge), works in the urgent care clinic and provides inpatient coverage. He is also one of the four Medical Leads of the outpatient mental health and addictions program (for Depression, Anxiety & Access). He will be joining the new Clinical Informatics Council
(replacing the former Physician IT Advocacy Committee at HRH).
Mahtab Asadabadi MD
Dr. Mahtab Asadabadi completed her first psychiatry residency at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran, followed by a second psychiatry residency in Canada, and joined Humber River Hospital as a full-time staff psychiatrist at the beginning of 2022. She sees general psychiatric outpatients, mostly diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders as well as PTSD. She is also interested in incorporating psychotherapy modalities in the psychiatric treatment plan for patients suffering from chronic depression, anxiety and trauma-related symptoms.
Luke Fazio MD, CM, FRCSC
Dr. Fazio completed medical school at McGill University. He did his residency in urology at Western University and completed a fellowship in endourology and minimally invasive surgery through the University of Toronto at St. Michael’s Hospital. He took an associate staff position at Queen’s University before joining the Division of Urology at Humber River Hospital. His practice focuses on endourology as well as minimally-invasive and robotic surgery. For the last 3 years he has been the Division Head for urology at Humber River Hospital. He is the co-chair of the robotic surgery program and innovation committee.
