Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be better able to:
- Describe the potential therapeutic uses for medical cannabis, including the role in chronic pain management
- Assess patients for cannabis use disorder
- Discuss considerations and implications for medical cannabis patients in the workplace and driving
- Interpret and utilize guidance documents and position statements towards appropriately incorporating medical cannabis into primary care practice
Faculty
Marni Brooks BSc, MSW, MD, CCFP, FCFP
Dr. Marni Brooks is a Toronto based Family Physician focusing in the area of Cannabinoid Medicine. Her other clinical interests include primary care and ongoing advocacy work as Executive Chair and Council Member at the Ontario Medical Association. She founded the first Medical Interest Group in Cannabinoid Medicine in the country at the OMA. Dr. Brooks also created one of the first slide decks to be accredited by CCFP on Cannabinoid Medicine and Chronic Pain. Her other passion is in Addiction Medicine, an area in which she practised exclusively prior to her focus in Cannabinoid Medicine. She has recently integrated her two passions, using Cannabinoid therapy as a tool when treating patients with addiction. Other interests of Dr. Brooks include working as an Independent Medical Examiner and as an expert witness in criminal cases. Dr. Brooks is committed to educating her physician peers as well as patients and their caregivers on the benefits of cannabis for a variety of health conditions, either as sole therapy or in conjunction with other treatments.
Jonathan Bertram MD CCFP - CAMH ADDICTIONS
Dr. Bertram is a Focused Practice Addictions & Pain Medicine Physician. He has special interests in working with Older Adults, Aboriginal affairs, and Mental Health/Addictions in Primary Care. A Clinical Lecturer at the University of Toronto and a member of the Board of Directors at the Ontario College of Family Physicians, he is currently practicing Addictions Medicine at the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto and running a Community Practice in Pain/Addictions Consultation & Shared Care co-located with the Bowmanville Family Health Organization.

- To explain the terms: Cannabis, Cannabinoids, Non-Cannabinoids, Phytocannabinoids and Endocannabinoids
- To describe the Endocannabinoid System and its significance
- To review the various options for chronic pain management
- To discuss the current evidence for Medical Cannabis in pain management
- To contrast Medical Cannabis from Opioids
- To describe a proper pain assessment and managing risk
- To identify how to use Medical Cannabis in case studies, including dosing

- Establish Context for Cannabis and Intersection between Non-Medical & Medical Use
- Identify Screening relevant with Cannabis Use including reference to Low Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines (LRCUG 2017)
- Identify Adverse Outcomes of Cannabis and Cannabis Use Disorder with reference to Low Risk Cannabis Use Guidelines (LRCUG 2017)
- Integrate content from Released and Upcoming high level documents -Non Medical Cannabis Clinical Tool - CEP (Centre for Effective Practice) (CEP 2018) -Screening and treatment options (drawn from work on National Best Practice Guidelines- Canadian Coalition for Senior’s Mental Health) (CCSMH 2019)
