Dr. Charlie Chan completed his tenure as Executive Vice-President & Chief Medical Officer at University Health Network (UHN) in 2019. Dr. Chan previous leadership roles over a span of twenty years at UHN included Interim President & CEO, Vice-President of Medical Affairs, Program Medical Director, Business Units Medical Director & Head of Respirology. He was promoted to Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto (U of T) in 2005. Dr. Chan’s previous leadership roles at UofT included Vice-Chair of Medicine, Interim Division Director of Respirology, Respirology Fellowship Program Director & Interim Head of Respirology at Sunnybrook & Women College Hospitals. Dr. Chan was appointed Emeritus Professor at the University of Toronto in 2021.
After receiving his M.D. and completing his Internal Medicine & Pulmonary Medicine training at U of T, Dr. Chan continued his clinical training at Yale University. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Yale University’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Dr. Chan has served and chaired numerous national and international expert panels for respiratory condition treatment guidelines. Dr. Chan contributed 117 peer-reviewed publications, 30 book chapters and 185 abstracts.
Dr. Chan is the lead Respirology assessor for the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and he was a member of the finance committee for the CPSO. Dr. Chan was previously a member of the examining board for adult Respirology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Chan has also served as board members for several non-profit foundations including Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation and Toronto General & Toronto Western Hospitals foundation (TGTWHF), and he is a member of the senate for the TGTWHF. Dr. Chan became a honorary life-member of the Ontario Thoracic Society in 2020.
Dr. Chan’s current roles include: Emeritus Professor of Medicine at UofT, Consultant Respirologist at UHN, and he is the Medical Director & Owner of Rosedale Pulmonary Function Laboratory & Agincourt Pulmonary Services.
