Barb Collins
Barbara Collins was appointed the President and CEO of Humber River Hospital (HRH) in July 2016. In her previous role as COO, she served as the Senior Executive for HRH’s redevelopment project, leading the design, construction and activation of HRH’s Wilson Site in October 2015, North America’s first fully digital hospital. This ground-breaking approach to integrating technology across all hospital systems and workflows was shortly followed by the development and implementation of HRH’s Command Centre in November 2017, a first in Canada and second in the world.
As President and CEO of Humber River Hospital she has overseen the establishment of two Reactivation Care Centres, one at each of the two legacy sites. Reactivation care is a focus program to maximize the health of our senior patients as they return to home or a long term care facility, and is a partnership programs with 8 GTA acute care hospitals. Currently under construction is a 320-bed long-term care facility at the Finch Avenue site scheduled to open in Fall 2022.
Barbara’s commitment to high reliability care and academic mission for hospital and community has led to the development of the North West Toronto Ontario Health Team of which Barbara is a co-chair. HRH has also been able to join the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network (TAHSN) as an associate affiliated academic hospital.
Sanjay Manocha
Humber River Hospital
Dr. Sanjay Manocha, originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, has been with Humber River Hospital since 2005. He completed his medical school and residency in Internal Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and fellowships in Respirology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Manitoba. This was followed by a research fellowship in Vancouver at St. Paul’s Hospital before moving to Toronto. He is the Division Head for Critical Care Medicine at Humber River Hospital and was actively involved in the pandemic preparations for COVID-19.
Sonu Gaind MD, FRCPC, DFCPA, FAPA
Mental Health & Addictions, Humber River Hospital
Dr. Gaind is Chief of Psychiatry/Medical Director of Mental Health at Humber River Hospital and Governor and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Humber River in 2014 he worked as a psycho-oncology consultant at Princess Margaret Hospital for nearly a decade and a half. He is a Board Member of the World Psychiatric Association and of the Canadian Association of Social Psychiatry, serves as co-Director of the Adult Psychiatry & Health Systems Division at the University of Toronto, and is a Past-President of both the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Ontario Psychiatric Association, as well as a Past-President of PAIRO.
Dr. Gaind has been actively involved in health policy development and advocacy since residency, and has been widely recognized with numerous regional, provincial and national awards for his teaching, advocacy and impact. He has helped form health policy and engaged medical colleagues across the country and around the world to be more aware of and advocate against policies that stigmatize and discriminate against the mentally ill, and has testified to provincial and federal bodies and legislators on mental health and health policy issues.
Sagar Desai BSC, MD MSC, FRCS(C)
Dr. Sagar J. Desai is a certified orthopaedic surgeon with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). He began his education at Western University in London, Ontario, where he completed his Honours Bachelor of Science (HBSc) degree in Kinesiology. He then completed his Medical Degree (MD) at the University of Toronto, in Toronto, Ontario.
Dr. Desai subsequently attended Western University for his Orthopaedic Surgery residency. He completed his residency in 2013 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). During his residency, Dr. Desai concurrently completed a Masters in Science (MSc) in Medical Biophysics.
Following his residency Dr. Desai completed two accredited sub-specialty fellowships. The first fellowship was completed in Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at the University of Toronto. The second was an AO Trauma accredited fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto.
Dr. Desai is currently a Trauma/Foot and Ankle surgeon at Humber River Hospital in Toronto.
Olubukunola Ayeni MD, MPH, FRCSC
I am a recent hire at Humber River Hospital and I am thrilled to be here. My training has taken me across several countries and I am glad to finally have settled in the GTA. After completing medical school at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, I trained at Western for Plastic Surgery. I then went to University of Arizona/Mayo Arizona for Hand and Microsurgery training. Finally, I won a scholarship to train with a world renowned hand Surgeon in Milan, Italy. I currently maintain a general practice that involves breast surgery, aesthetics, trauma, and skin cancers with a special interest in hand and microsurgery.
Syed Najaf Nadeem MBBS FRCPC
Humber River Hospital
Dr. Nadeem graduated from Dow Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan. He completed his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at The Aga Khan University, Pakistan. He then came to Canada for Coronary Interventional training at Dalhousie University, Halifax and subsequently Adult Congenital and Structural Heart Disease Interventional fellowship at Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network. He has received his certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Nadeem has been a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and Staff Interventional cardiologist at QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax for more than ten years. He served as a Senator at the Dalhousie University Senate. He developed the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Interventional (TAVI) program in Halifax. He also served as Director for Clinical Associate program at QEII. He has recently joined Humber River Hospital as the Head, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine.
Vighnesh Bharath MD, FRCP(C)
Adjunct Professor - Queen's University and University of Toronto
Vighnesh Bharath is currently a hematologist/oncologist at Humber River Hospital, practicing both benign and malignant hematology. He completed medical school at Queen’s University, followed by residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology at Western University. Currently, he also sits on various hospital committees involving transfusion, anticoagulation, and medical education. He is appointed as adjunct professor at both Queen’s University and University of Toronto, and is regularly involved in teaching medical students and residents at Humber River Hospital. He currently acts as the medical education lead for the oncology department (to organize and supervise trainee electives), and also holds a master’s certificate in Healthcare Leadership from Schulich at York University.
Lynn Sterling MD, FRCSC, MSc, NCMP
Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Humber River Hospital
Dr. Lynn Sterling completed her medical school and residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Toronto and furthered her education with a Masters in Health Sciences Education at McMaster University. She is a North American Menopause Society Certified Menopause Practitioner (NCMP) and has completed additional training in Colposcopy & Vulvar Disorders both locally and internationally.
She practices as a general obstetrician and gynaecologist with a focus on obstetrics, minimally invasive surgery, menopause, and colposcopy/vulvar disorders. She has a special interest in teaching medical students and residents. She was the recipient of Humber River Hospital’s 2021 Dragon’s Den award which has funded a CO2 laser to treat lower genital tract disorders at our hospital.
